Nehemiah had the safest job an exile could get. He lived in the palace. He stood closer to the king than the king's own wife. And he gave it all up over a pile of rubble nine hundred miles away. The people living in Jerusalem had walked past those broken walls for nearly a century and a half. Every single day. Saying the same thing: isn't that a shame. And then they kept walking. Comfort isn't neutral. It costs you something. It'll quietly take a decade of a marriage that could have been great, years of staying connected to your kids, health you could have had — and it never feels like theft while it's happening.
